Frame condition is one of the most important things to check when buying a second hand bike. Components can often be replaced, but a damaged frame can make a bike unsafe or uneconomical to repair.
Different frame materials show damage in different ways, so inspect slowly and carefully.
Start with a full visual check
Look over the entire frame in good light. Check for cracks, dents, ripples, deep scratches, rust, paint bubbling or areas that look different from the rest of the frame.
Pay special attention to high-stress areas such as the head tube, bottom bracket, seat tube, chain stays, seat stays and around the dropouts.
Check aluminium frames
Aluminium frames are common on road, hybrid and mountain bikes. Look for dents, cracks near welds and signs of impact.
Small paint chips are usually cosmetic, but cracks around welds should be taken seriously.
Check carbon frames
Carbon fibre needs extra care. Damage may look like a crack, soft spot, unusual mark or area where the clear coat has lifted. Tap-testing is sometimes used, but it is not a substitute for expert inspection.
If a carbon bike has been crashed or the seller cannot explain suspicious marks, be cautious.
Check steel frames
Steel bikes can be durable, but rust is the main concern. Surface rust may be manageable, but deep corrosion, bubbling paint or rust around joints can be more serious.
Look inside visible openings where possible, such as the seat tube area.
Look for crash clues
Bent handlebars, scraped shifters, damaged pedals, mismatched wheels or heavy marks on one side can suggest a crash. This does not always mean the frame is unsafe, but it should prompt closer inspection.
When to walk away
Walk away if you see clear cracks, badly dented tubes, suspicious carbon damage or a seller who avoids questions about the frame.

Final thoughts
A second hand bike frame should be structurally sound before you consider the price, brand or components. Take time to inspect the frame and ask about any damage.
If you are unsure, get the bike checked by a qualified mechanic before buying.
