After emerging in the USA in the 1970s and become something of a craze with teenagers in Britain in the 1980s, BMX has maintained and grown in popularity over the years and is now even an Olympic sport. Second hand BMX bikes have a distinctive design. The wheels and frame are small, the saddles sits low and the handlebars are tall. Most BMX bikes only have one gear too. The other noticeable thing is that, typically, BMX bikes for sale just come in one size. With most other types of bikes, choosing an appropriate size is an important consideration as this is has a big impact on the comfort of the ride. However, with BMX the focus is on control. The small frames of second hand BMX bikes make the machines easy to manoeuvre and easier for the rider to move around on - especially to do tricks.
However, there are differences with wheel sizes. The standard size is 20 inches. Smaller sized wheels are excellent for younger, smaller kids. Bigger wheels - up to 24 and 26 inches are excellent for keeping the momentum of the ride and for big jumps, even if you do lose out a little in handling tight corners or when attempting tricks.
A strong frame is really important with second hand BMX bikes. Steel is the standard but more advanced machines will use materials such as chromoly steel which is even stronger, but also lighter than conventional steel too.
Other features of used BMX bikes are the very small cogs which allow for plenty of clearance under the bike. Also, although BMX bikes have two brakes, often pros will remove one and just have a rear brake - this can be better for performing tricks. Some advanced BMX bikes for sale will feature gyro brakes that enable the handlebars to turn 360 degrees without the brake cables becoming tangled. However, the most advanced machines omit gyros in order to reduce the overall weight of the bike and to offer the most efficient braking. Stunt pegs can also be added if you want to perform lots of grinds and stunts.
