Unicycles are an unusual choice of bike perhaps, and not one you would probably go for if you want to get fit and commute to work by bike instead of car every day! But, whilst other types of bikes will give you much more practicality and versatility, few others will give you the fun - or the challenge - of learning to ride a unicycle.

Where to start is a key question that people have. There are various types of used unicycle available, from learner models to ones that are specifically aimed at those that want to do tricks and others that are best suited for road use.
Much like a conventional bike, choosing the right size is crucial. Like children's bikes, unicycles are categorised by their wheel size. As a general rule, if you are looking for a used unicycle for a child, you should buy the largest size wheeled model that you can fit them onto, up to 20 inches (learner used unicycles tend to be in the 12" to 20" bracket). Leg length is crucial and the size of the wheel has a real impact how easy it is to learn to ride a unicycle. For example, a 20" wheel will roll more smoothly than a 16" wheeled model will do. The larger sized wheel is actually easier to learn on. Adult learner models of second had unicycles tend to begin at 20".
Your choice of used unicycle will also be influenced by what you intend to do with it. For doing tricks and such like, a unicycle with a 20" wheel is the favourite of most. This is the size that is often preferred by jugglers, skaters or BMX enthusiasts. For moving more quickly, a larger sized wheel, such as 24" for example might be better.
Although only intended as a rough guide, the usual size of wheels for adults is 20 inches up to 26 inches, for novices and those trying to learn the skill of unicycling. The standard size models are typically 20" to 24" and used unicycles designed for road use often come with wheel sizes ranging from 26" up to 36"
