Entry level second hand bikes are functional. Practical and useful enough to ride over a variety of off-road terrains, they will give adequate support. The key is in the term, if a second hand MTB bike is described as an entry level machine, it is just that - it is meant as an introduction the sport. It isn't wise to spend hundreds and hundreds of pounds (or even thousands) on a high-end specification MTB bike if you aren't absolutely sure how serious you are about the sport. It's worth testing the water first with an entry level bike.
Hard tail second hand MTB bikes are lighter and have the added benefit of front-end suspension which is great when covering bumpier ground. However, for MTB riding over more extreme terrains and conditions, full-suspension second hand MTB bikes are usually more appropriate.
The more money you spend, the greater the amount of features and the higher the spec you can expect to find in used MTB bikes - as a general rule of thumb, the more serious you are about the sport, the more spec you will crave.
